Departmental Information
Admission to Washington State University Graduate School is a joint decision between
the Dean of the Graduate School and your prospective
department or college.
Many departments require additional materials or have earlier deadlines, so we recommend
you contact them early in the process. Also, if you miss the priority deadline,
you must contact the department to see if they are still accepting applications.
Please note:
Applicants may not be considered regardless of the previous institution's credentials
if their application is deemed inadequate, incomplete, or insufficient.

Online application instructions
- In order for applications to be considered, all required sections must be completed.
- Include an authorized credit card payment for the non-refundable processing
fee.
- For the online application WSU only accepts Visa and MasterCard credit cards or
online Pay by Check through U.S. bank accounts. Checks sent by mail are not accepted.
Security information: Your debit/credit card information is encrypted during transmission
from your browser to our server and during payment authorization. None of your debit/credit
card information is stored in our database.
Personal information
- Current and permanent address
- Social Security Number (optional)
- Date and place of birth
- Residency information
- Name and location of all colleges and universities and dates of attendance
- All degrees earned, or expected; and dates
- Former WSU student ID# (if applicable)
- Visa/MasterCard number and expiration date
- Race/ethnicity and disability information (optional)
- Names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, institution or business, and positions of
three references for letters of recommendation
Letters of Recommendation
Once you submit your application, your references will be contacted automatically
through the online application system and asked to submit electronically a recommendation
form.
Since their recommendations will come directly to the Graduate School once they
have submitted the electronic version, there is no need for a paper recommendation.
Please contact these references to be sure they are willing to respond to your request
for a recommendation and ask them to discuss your leadership, academic standards,
and skills as they pertain to your primary interest area.

Helpful Hints
- Start your application process as soon as possible.
- The application is case sensitive; enter names exactly as you would like the Graduate
School to receive them. (example: McDonald, rather than mcdonald)
- Only abbreviate when absolutely necessary. Do not abbreviate school names.
- Enter your full legal name as it would appear on your passport.

When using a shipping service such as Fed Ex, UPS, or DHL, they will not deliver
to our Post Office box, so you must send to the Graduate School's physical address:

Transcripts
- Official transcripts are those mailed directly from the registrar of the
institution attended; transcripts that are not mailed directly from the
registrar are not acceptable. The Graduate School will accept electronic
transcripts from U.S. institutions via the official electronic transcript
process of the registrar's office of the institution. In such cases, the
applicant should provide the registrar with the following email address for
corresponding with the Graduate School regarding electronic transcripts:
- Applicants who attended institutions outside the United States or Canada should follow the directions below.
- All transcripts sent to the Graduate School as part of the application process become
part of the official Graduate School application file and cannot be returned or
transferred.
- Records from Washington State University need not be submitted since these are available
to the Graduate School.
The following is required for admission to the Graduate School at Washington State
University.
Applicants who attended school in the United States or Canada must submit
one set of official transcripts directly from:
- All accredited colleges or universities attended for any undergraduate
coursework (including undergraduate coursework taken after the bachelor’s degree);
and
- The accredited colleges or universities from which any bachelor’s
degrees and/or graduate degrees have been granted or are expected; and
- The accredited colleges or universities showing any graded graduate
level (including doctoral) coursework taken after the bachelor’s degree.
Applicants who attended school outside the United States or Canada must submit:

Transcripts, mark sheets, grade reports, or examination results, along with degree certificates from all higher education institutions attended outside the United States or Canada. When sending official transcripts from schools located in non-English-speaking countries, have each institution submit both the English translation plus an original language record. For these documents to be official they need to be in a stamped and sealed envelope. Mail these items to the following address:

For International Students
Admission Requirements
- Prospective domestic students must have received a baccalaureate degree from a college
or university, accredited by a recognized association, with a cumulative grade point
average of 3.00. (Note: Applied baccalaureate degrees from Washington
State community colleges authorized to offer such degrees are considered acceptable
for admission to the Graduate School. However, specific programs may not accept
applied baccalaureate degree applicants who do not have the appropriate
prerequisites or may require prerequisite coursework as a condition of admission.)
- Prospective international students must have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's
degree from an approved institution.
- Usually a minimum of four years of study beyond grade 12
- a grade point average equivalent to a U.S. grade of "B" or better. Click

- Official TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB scores, if applicable for international applicants where English is not the primary language, submitted directly to the Graduate School from the testing services. Check
English proficiency requirements for specific test score requirements.
- Evidence of financial support
- Acceptance by the department or program in which prospective students seek a degree
or graduate study.
- The Dean of the Graduate School grants final approval of admission, assuming general
admission requirements have been met, and when evidence indicates a high probability
of success in the prospective degree program.
